What is the best way to achieve an accurate reading from my thermometer?

Ear

ALWAYS replace the disposable lens filters with a genuine Braun lens filter to maintain accuracy and hygiene. The use of any other brand may alter the reading.

The right ear measurement may differ from the measurement taken in the left ear. Therefore, ALWAYS take the temperature in the same ear. The ear must be free from obstructions or excess earwax build-up to take an accurate reading.

External factors may influence ear temperatures, including when an individual has:

Poor probe placement

Used lens filter

Dirty lens

In the cases below, wait 20 minutes prior to taking a temperature.

Extreme hot and cold room temperature

Hearing aid

Use the untreated ear if ear drops or other ear medications have been placed in the ear canal.

Use the ear that has been facing upwards, if an individual has been lying down on their side with an ear face down on a pillow.

Forehead Only

Hold parallel to forehead and keep head still.

Hold thermometer steady. DO NOT swipe.

Forehead and No-Touch Models

Let the thermometer and individual being measured acclimate to the temperature of the room in which the measurement will be taken.

The thermometer needs to acclimate to the room temperature for 10 minutes before taking a measurement.

The individual being measured should be indoors for 30 minutes before taking a measurement. External temperature can impact skin temperature.

Ensure that the individual’s forehead is prepared for measurement.

Wipe away any sweat with a dry cloth. Sweat can cool skin resulting in a false reading.

Ensure that the forehead is clean. If you clean the forehead, wait 10 minutes before taking a measurement.

Hair can insulate the forehead and make it slightly warmer. Make sure to move hair away from the forehead and wait 10 minutes before taking a measurement.

How should I store my thermometer?

Store thermometer and lens filters in a dry location free from dust and contamination and away from direct sunlight. Always store the thermometer with the protective cap or with the cradle in place to prevent dirt and scratches from damaging the device.

Do not store this thermometer in temperature extremes below -13 °F or over 131 °F or in excessive humidity (above 95% relative humidity).

If thermometer is stored in a location that is cooler or warmer than where it will be used, allow it to acclimate to the room temperature for 10 minutes before taking the measurement.

How to use the Braun Lens Filter

To avoid inaccurate measurements ALWAYS use this thermometer with a new, clean lens filter attached.

If the thermometer is accidentally used without a lens filter attached, clean the lens.

The lens filter indicator will blink to signal one is needed.

Attach a new lens filter by pushing the thermometer probe straight into the lens filter inside the box and then pulling out.

Note: The Braun ThermoScan will not work unless a lens filter is attached.

For the next measurement, press Eject button to remove and discard used lens filter, and put on a new, clean lens filter. For models without and eject button (ThermoScan 3 and 4), pull off lens filter and discard.

What is ExacTemp®?

ExacTemp® is a guidance system that confirms good position in the ear with a light and a beep to ensure accurate temperature measurement.

Braun does not offer a digital stick thermometer, but we recommend using the Vicks digital thermometers.  They are clinically accurate, provide color-coded fever guidance and fast readings.

Are batteries included with thermometers?

Yes, please see product comparison chart below to see specific battery information for each model.

Do Braun thermometers come with lens filters?

Lens filters are included with all our Ear thermometers.  Please use a new lens filter after each use for an accurate reading.

Do all Braun thermometers take the same size lens filter?

Yes.  Our Braun lens filters are universal across all our Ear thermometers & Braun lens filters are the only brand to ensure an accurate reading when used with Braun thermometers.

Are Braun lens filters BPA free?

Yes, Braun disposable lens filters are BPA & latex free.

What are the benefits to using an ear thermometer?

The ear is a good site for temperature measurement because it reflects the core temperature of the body[1]. Body temperature is regulated by the hypothalamus[2], which shares the same blood supply as the tympanic membrane[3]. This means changes in core body temperature are usually detected sooner in the tympanic membrane than other areas.  All Braun infrared ear thermometers feature ThermoScan® technology, which measure heat generated by the eardrum and surrounding tissue to give an accurate temperature on an easy to read digital display in seconds.

What are the benefits of forehead thermometers & how do they work?

Similar to non-contact thermometers, a forehead thermometer is a quick and fuss-free way of measuring a child’s temperature that measures the infrared heat waves emitted thru the surface of the skin.  The main difference is that you need to gently touch the center of the forehead to take a reading.  It is a great choice for young squirmy children that are feeling under the weather.

How do I clean my thermometer?

Cleaning varies by model.  Please refer to your specific thermometer below for instructions on how to clean:

ThermoScan® 7 IRT6520, ThermoScan® 5 IRT6500, IRT6020 & ThermoScan® 3 IRT3030:

Gently wipe the surface of the probe tip with a cotton swab or soft cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol (70% Isopropyl).

NTF3000US No Touch + Forehead:

Use an alcohol swab or cotton swab moistened with alcohol (70% Isopropyl) to clean the thermometer casing and the measuring probe. Ensure that no liquid enters the interior of the thermometer. Please wait 10 minutes after cleaning before taking a temperature measurement.

What is Age Precision® Technology?

Clinical research shows the definition of fever changes as newborns grow into children & children grow into adults. The Age Precision feature takes the guesswork out of temperature taking, allowing you to select the appropriate age setting – 0-3 months, 3-36 months or 36+ months.

Can the preferred Age Range be saved so it doesn’t need to be set every time?

The Age Precision feature is available on the BNT400 and IRT6520*, but only the BNT400 can be programmed to set a preferred age range.  To save a preferred age range (lock in an age setting), so that the preferred age range will be automatically selected when the thermometer is turned ON, follow these steps for the BNT400:

To set a preferred age range: (Locking an age setting)

1. Make sure the thermometer is OFF.

2. Press and hold the power button and Age Precision Button (Fig. 1) for 4 seconds. The unit will turn on, displaying a yellow backlight and the 3 age range icons will flash (fig.2).

3. Press the Age Precision button (Fig. 1). The age range selected will flash. Press the Age Precision button until your desired age range is flashing on the display.

4. Once the desired age range is selected, stop pressingt he button and wait 3 seconds. The green backlight will illuminate an dhte selected age range will turn solid. After 4 seconds, the thermometer will turn off.

5. The preferred age range will be automatically selected when the thermometer is turned ON.

*The IRT6520 will default to the last age setting used if you do not change it.
